Facebook, Twitter make young girls seem more aggressive, expert says

Facebook and Twitter are making teenage girls come across as more aggressive, according to a language campaigner cited in the British media.

Language employed by social media users is becoming shorter, sharper and more "to the point," Marie Clair, from Britain's Plain English Campaign, told the Daily Mail.?

As a result, the many teenage users of such media have less time to deliberate carefully over their words, and can come across as curt, straightforward and even aggressive when speaking to one another and adults.

The change is more noticeable in girls than boys because they communicate more frequently, Clair said.

"Young people?s language in general is becoming more direct in comparison to their parents and the business community because of the communication channels they?re more familiar with.

"Those fast communication channels of Facebook, email and Twitter [that] they?ve grown up with mean they haven?t got as much time to deliberate and choose their words.

"That?s perhaps why they come across as being more aggressive. It?s not intentional. Curtness tends to be short, sharp and to the point. But it?s a fine line between being curt or aggressive and being straightforward."

Earlier this year, author Sir Terry Pratchett suggested the use of Twitter and texting had led to increasing frustration among youths, the Daily Telegraph reported.?

"Kids now seem unmotivated. Social media is not helping and texting certainly isn't. You have to have interaction with other people," Pratchett reportedly said.

"If you have the words to identify exactly what you mean, you can get your message across. I'm sure this is linked to rough behavior."

And actor Ralph Fiennes famously lamented that modern language was "being eroded" in "a world of truncated sentences, sound bites and Twitter."

"Our expressiveness and our ease with some words is being diluted so that the sentence with more than one clause is a problem for us, and the word of more than two syllables is a problem for us," Fiennes ? who does not use Twitter ? said, according to the Daily Mail reported.?

However, not everybody agreed that jargon commonly used in social media was harming the English language.

The Utah Statesman ? the Utah State University paper ? pointed out in a recent editorial that the English language had been "transforming constantly."?

"We?ve created a new language through social media... We believe that many elderly people would agree the English language was ruined with the invention of rap music. It?s all relative, really. A problem does exist when a social media user fails to capitalize sentences in employment cover letters due to poor tweeting habits. People can?t be that daft, can they? We prefer to think optimistically about our generation."

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Chimpanzees at a sanctuary for the animals in eastern South Africa pulled an American working there into their enclosure, where they severely bit him and dragged him nearly a kilometer (half mile), according to a parademic official and local media reports.

The man, described as a ranger, was leading a tour group at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 medical emergency services company in a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

The man had "multiple and severe bite wounds" and was dragged nearly a kilometer by the chimpanzees, Wicks said.

Beeld, a South African newspaper, reported Friday that the man was an American researcher who was giving tourists a lecture at the time of the attack. The tourists were escorted to safety by staff members as the chimpanzees dragged the man out of their enclosure, Beeld reported. The sanctuary's director fired into the air to scare the chimps away from the man, and then chased the animals back into their enclosure. Beeld reported the man lost part of an ear and parts of his fingers.

The Associated Press did not immediately get responses to phone calls and an email seeking comment from officials at the institute and its sanctuary.

The international institute founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall opened the sanctuary in 2006. It is a home to chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, rescued from further north in Africa. Some of the chimpanzees at the sanctuary lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions as little more than roadside attractions.

In the United States this week, lawyers for a Connecticut woman severely disfigured in 2009 when she was attacked by a friend's pet chimpanzee, filed papers accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a staff member's warning that it was dangerous.

GOP: Obama health care law remains bad policy

A top Republican said today that President Obama's health care law may be constitutional, but it remains bad policy and the GOP will continue trying to repeal it.

"In the middle of a tough economy, President Obama passed a health care law that has made our economy even worse," said Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., in the weekly Republican radio address.

Barrasso, a doctor, said that "by forcing expensive new health care mandates through Congress," Obama has "made it harder for Americans to find good jobs and provide for their families."

The address ran two days after the Supreme Court upheld the law Obama signed in 2010.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and other Republicans have vowed to make repeal of the health care law a major issue in the November elections.

Obama said this week that, given the Supreme Court's decision, it is time to move forward with the law designed to provide health insurance to all Americans.

Hi. I'm Dr. John Barrasso, United States Senator for Wyoming.

The President and his allies in Congress are going to try to convince the public that the Supreme Court just gave the health care law a seal of approval.

The fact is that this is the same failed policy that won't lower the cost of health care in America.

On Thursday, I was in the courtroom as the Supreme Court ruled that the President's health care law is what the President claimed it was not: a new tax.

President Obama has repeatedly promised, and I quote, 'if you're a family making less than $250,000 a year, my plan,' he said, 'won't raise your taxes one penny.'

Now, all of America knows the truth.

The President's health care law hires more IRS agents to investigate you and to make sure you buy insurance -- but it fails to deal with the shortage of nurses and doctors to actually take care of you.

The President's health care tax is only one of his many broken promises related to this law.

He promised lower health care costs, but they keep going up.

He promised lower insurance premiums, but they've increased $2,400 a family over the past three years.

He promised the law would create jobs, but the Congressional Budget Office projects that 800,000 fewer people will have jobs because of this law.

He promised it wouldn't add a dime to the deficit, but the law calls for trillions of dollars in new spending that Americans don't want.

The President said he would protect Medicare-but instead he raided $500 billion from our seniors on Medicare-not to strengthen Medicare-but to start a whole new government program for someone else.

Even after the Supreme Court ruling was announced, the President said that if you like the insurance you have, you can keep it.

Mr. President, because of your law, many Americans have already lost the health insurance that they had and they liked.

Each broken promise proves that the Supreme Court's ruling did absolutely nothing to improve the President's failed health care law.

It remains unworkable, unaffordable, and very unpopular.

Americans deserve better.

As a doctor who's practiced medicine for 25 years, I know that the health care system in this country is far from perfect. It's one of the reasons I ran for the Senate in the first place.

The goal of health care reform all along should have been to ensure that people get the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at a lower cost.

Under President Obama's health care law, they got the exact opposite-tax increases and government control.

Now we have another chance to reform our health care system and in a way that does not result in higher costs, in fewer choices, and less personal control.

There should be no doubt: Republicans in Congress will fight to repeal the President's failed health care law.

It is a law that is bad for patients, it is bad for the nurses and the doctors who care for those patients, and it's terrible for taxpayers.

In the middle of a tough economy, President Obama passed a health care law that has made our economy even worse.

By forcing expensive new health care mandates through Congress, he's made it harder for Americans to find good jobs and provide for their families.

With unemployment at over 8 percent for over 40 straight months, we cannot afford for this tax to stay in place any longer.

Once we have repealed the law, we will tackle the serious problems that plagued our health care system and are now getting worse.

We will replace this law with real reforms that will actually lower costs and improve access to care.

We will not make the same mistakes the Democrats made.

We will not raise taxes in the middle of a recession.

We will not push through a 2,700 page bill the American people can't afford and don't want.

Unlike President Obama, we will not cut deals behind closed doors to protect special interest groups, or include political carve outs for some states at the expense of others.

What we will do is make sure that our health care system is truly patient-centered, not government-centered.

Republicans in Congress are committed to a step-by-step approach that's focused on lowering the cost of care.

That means commonsense solutions, like allowing premium breaks to encourage healthy behavior.

It means letting consumers buy insurance across state lines, and letting small businesses pool together to offer affordable health insurance to their workers.

It means finally ending the lawsuit abuse that leads doctors to practice defensive medicine by ordering expensive and unnecessary tests.

Now that the Supreme Court has acted, the American people cannot afford for Congress to wait any longer.

It is time for Washington to repeal the President's health care law and replace it with real health care reform.

Thank you for joining me today.

Watch Android Jelly Bean Transfer Photos and Videos with a Tap [VIDEO]

Alongside many other new features in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google has rolled out an updated version of Android Beam ? one that allows you to transfer photos and videos between two devices equipped with Near-Field Communication technology, or NFC.

First offered in Ice Cream Sandwich, Android Beam already allowed you to share things like web pages, contacts, directions, and apps by tapping together two phones.

If you?re already familiar with Android Beam, the new functionality is going to look and feel much like the Ice Cream Sandwich version. To send a picture or video you just have to load the photo up on your device and then hold it up against the rear of the device you want to send it to.

For instance, if you want to send a photo from your Galaxy Nexus to a Nexus 7 tablet, you would load the photo up on the Galaxy Nexus, and then touch it to the rear of the tablet.

SEE ALSO: Nexus 7 Tablet: First Jelly Bean Tablet Is Light and Fast

Once the phone detects the Nexus 7, it will prompt you to tap the photo on the phone to beam it. A notification will pop up on your tablet, acknowledging the download. When the transfer is completed, your photo or video will show up on the other device -? in this case, the Nexus 7 -? just as if you took it on the device to begin with.

Check out the video above for a look at Jelly Bean?s version of Android Beam in action.

While definitely cool to watch, transferring videos and photos between devices isn?t exactly new.

The service Bump, for instance, will also let you transfer pictures between phones and tablets ?- even to your computer ? and can be used with both iOS and Android devices.

Do you see yourself using Android Beam more now that it supports photo and video transfers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Women make splash in Mexico's elections

Mexico is facing a milestone for women as it fields its first female candidate from a major party in the July 1 presidential election. But women are vying to make an impact in local elections as well.

In the conservative city of Guadalajara, one candidate even opted to go topless to get?attention for her bid to congress.?Even though she's been criticized for objectifying women, she sees it differently. ?We had to do something that would have an impact,? says Natalia Ju?rez of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), as campaigning wrapped up before Sunday's race. Mexicans will vote this weekend for a new president, governors in a handful of states, and a whole new congress.

Ms. Ju?rez raised eyebrows recently when she disseminated provocative photos during her campaign. The first, a billboard image of the candidate and six other women nude from the waist up, their left hands covering breasts, brought widespread attention. Similarly controversial images followed.

For some women it showed she would be an honest politician, with nothing to hide. But not all of the reaction was positive. Critics from around the world accused her of objectifying women for political gain. But Ju?rez, a philosophy professor at the University of Guadalajara, shrugs off criticism. Her intention was to fight prejudices and ?help demystify the feminine body,? she says.

She acknowledges that disrobing as a campaign tactic is a radical notion for some, but it?s not the only unconventional proposition Ju?rez advocates. She also supports the legalization of drugs, particularly marijuana, as a way to combat the country?s spiraling drug violence. And she believes it?s time the country focused more attention on the rights of women and gays.

On Wednesday, the last day of campaigning in Mexico, Ju?rez shook hands with dozens of vendors at a bustling market in the heart of the city. But she spoke little of the more controversial aspects of her campaign. Instead, she distributed yellow backpacks with her party?s logo and took shots at the more powerful political parties, promising to work for progress in her diverse district.

?It?s time for change,? she told Sandra Flores Mendoza, who was selling a variety of fresh produce at the market.

Ms. Flores, who clutched a campaign leaflet of Ju?rez?s nude photo in her hands, says she plans to vote for the professor.

?Her photo says a lot about her,? says the vendor. ?It says she is bold and uninhibited; that can serve her well in Congress. I think she?s a strong candidate who has nothing to hide.?

After chatting with Ju?rez nearby, vendor Pedro Mejia Rodriguez says he likes what he hears. But he views her use of nudity to try to win votes as immoral.

?People's actions, their work, should speak for themselves," he says. "Is the next step to get naked in Congress??

Not a chance, Ju?rez says.

US exempts China from Iran oil sanctions for 6 months

The United States has granted China a last-minute, six-month exemption from financial penalties for buying Iranian oil, as the latest trance of US sanctions aimed at Iran?s crude exports kicked in on Friday.

According to Reuters, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said both China and Singapore, which was also granted a temporary reprieve, had earned the exemption by cutting imports of Iranian crude, and insisted in a statement that the reductions carried out by Iran?s 20 major oil buyers ? all of whom have now been exempted from the latest sanctions ? had made a clear impact:

?Their cumulative actions are a clear demonstration to Iran?s government that Iran?s continued violation of its international nuclear obligations carries an enormous economic cost,? she said.

More from GlobalPost:?EU embargo on Iran - is China cheering?

Under US legislation that came into force at the end of 2011, countries had to show they had made significant reductions to the amount of crude they importing from Tehran by June 28, on penalty of being shut out of the US financial system, according to the BBC.

Chinese imports from Iran dropped sharply over the first five months of this year, but this was mainly due to an ongoing pricing dispute.

The sanctions are intended to pressure Iran into halting its controversial uranium enrichment program, which Tehran insists is for purely civilian purposes. According to The Financial Times, the measures have sharply cut Iran?s crude exports, with some analysts predicting that monthly exports may be almost halved next month from July 2011.

China has opposed the latest set of US sanctions, which ban firms that engage with the Iranian central bank from business in the US. Officials in Beijing insisted earlier this month that purchases of Iranian crude are ?legitimate,? The Wall Street Journal reported.?

Backyard Birthday Party Balloons

My own children?s birthdays have a way of sneaking up on me.

This could be because of my poor family planning the fact that all three of my children were born at very busy times of the year for our family (before and after the December holidays and just as the school year is ending).

Usually I remember their birthdays about 6-8 weeks before the actual date and think to myself, ?Oh, that?s still ages away. I?ll have plenty of time to prepare!? Only to be jolted a little less than 3 weeks prior to, when my child begins talking about their upcoming party and I realize?

?>? That I haven?t done a darn thing to make arrangements for it yet.

It wasn?t always like this. Yet, it seems that over the years, birthdays have gotten considerably harder to plan for.

Now it often seems that all things related to birthday parties just seem Way. Too. Complicated. (And ridiculously out of control.)

The Birthday To-Do List

1. Find a Date

First things first, you must pick a date. This may sound like the easiest part but I assure you,

It. IS. Not.

There are family schedules, friends? schedules, school schedules, sport schedules, work schedules ? loads of schedules to take into consideration. Take if from me, finding a date that fits our schedule, your schedule, their schedule, EVERYONE?s schedule is close to impossible.

2. Pick a Theme

Next, one needs to secure a party ?theme? ? because every party has to have a theme, right?

Personally, this is the point when the ?creative juices? in me begin to brainstorm for the perfect birthday party theme, one that factors in my child?s current likes, dislikes, favorite colors, foods, sports, etc. Eventually, after securing complete approval from my child that this is indeed going to be THE BEST fill-in-the-blank-with-the-choice-theme-of-the-year party EVER! ?

I always seem to manage to come up with the ONE ideal, individualized theme?

Which is not what the party store has available and/or in stock that year.

3. Find a Venue

If you think the term ?venue? sounds a little too formal for a child?s birthday party you are sorely misinformed. These days every place under the stars has jumped on the birthday party bandwagon ? it?s not just Chuck E. Cheese or ?bust? ? no-sir-ee!

There are movie theater parties, and swimming parties, and iceskating parties, and water park parties, and pottery-making parties, and bounce-house parties, and music parties, and of course the tried-and-true home birthday party (my personal favorite*).

*Important Note ? You may want to review To-Do List item #4 before deciding on your venue.

4. Prepare the Guest List

Nearly 12 years ago I spent days (maybe months?) on the difficult task of determining my own wedding guest list. Paring down my own child?s birthday party guest list comes in a very close second to that.

  • Who do you invite?
  • How many do you invite?
  • Do you invite the child?s whole class so no one feels left out?
  • Do you just invite girls?
  • Do you just invite boys?
  • Do you just invite neighborhood friends?
  • What about family?
  • And don?t forget about Facebook friends because you want to post all the photos on Facebook and you don?t want anyone to feel left out.

Soon your list has quite possibly grown to numbers that seem above ?maximum capacity? for your home. To-Do list item #3 ? the party venue ? now becomes a very important issue.

In our household, it also starts to become necessary at a certain age to separate the ?family party? and ?friend party.? Which now means ?rinse and repeat? steps 1-4 for party number 2. (Are you doing the math? This now means that 3 kids = 6 parties?)

5. Send out the Invitations

* Note: This is a very important step. DO NOT FORGET like I almost have a million times.

** See To-Do List item #2: Pick a Theme ? this is where picking a ?party-store theme? comes in handy so you don?t need to hand craft your own invitations like I often end up doing.

*** Afterthought: Waiting until later on this To-Do list item has parental advantages a direct effect on party attendance.

6. Plan the Party Activities and Timeline

Words to the wise:

  • Keep your party length manageable. Too much time = too much chaos.
  • Just because your child likes art projects/sports/chocolate cake (or whatever else you choose to fill your party with), doesn?t mean every other child there will (don?t take it personally).
  • Every kid I have ever met, anywhere ? loves pi?atas and water balloon tosses (just sayin?).

Happy Birth Day?

See?
Com. Pli. Cate. ED.
Ridiculously complicated.

Birthdays are supposed to be happy.

In fact, they should be happy moments for both the child and the parent in my opinion because ? speaking as a mother ? aren?t our children?s birthdays technically our ?birth? day too? It is a celebration of the day we gave birth to them.

One too many times I have found myself unnecessarily stressing about throwing the perfect party when it seems in looking back that no matter how small or big a birthday party ? it was STILL memorable in my child?s eyes.

So, after 3 kids, multiple party successes and failures, hosting birthday parties that have been ?off-sight? and ?on-location? ? ultimately this is what I?ve learned:

  1. Never judge another mother?s party venue choice.
  2. Try not to take it personally when my own child isn?t invited to another child?s birthday party.
  3. Don?t do more then I can personally handle ? it?s not worth it.

And when it?s all over, my only advice to all parents is to give yourself a pat on the back and smile. You did it!

Leave a Comment. What are your birthday party experiences like? Do you think planning your children?s birthday parties is getting too complicated? What birthday tips, tricks, and insights can you share with other mothers?

British Queen, ex-IRA chief to seal end to conflict

BELFAST (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth is to shake the hand of a once-feared commander of the Irish Republican Army on Wednesday to draw a line under one of Europe's bitterest conflicts, which cost the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians, including her cousin.

The meeting with Martin McGuinness in a Belfast theatre, 14 years after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) ended its war against Britain's claim to Northern Ireland, will be the final major handshake in a peace process whose success has been studied around the world.

There has been scattered opposition from dissident Irish militants and from some of the IRA's victims. But the vast majority of the province's politicians backs the meeting, the first between the queen and a senior member of the IRA, or its political wing, Sinn Fein.

"This closes the circle," Brian Feeney, a historian of the Irish republican movement, said. "All the important people in Britain and Ireland have met each other and acknowledged each other. It brings Sinn Fein into the mainstream."

McGuinness previously shook the hand of the once fiery, anti-Catholic Unionist leader the Reverend Ian Paisley, who later joined a power-sharing provincial government with the former IRA man.

The meeting with the queen is so sensitive that officials on Tuesday afternoon were unable to say whether it would be open to the press, or even if a planned handshake would be photographed.

The queen regularly meets senior Unionist politicians, who want Northern Ireland to stay inside the United Kingdom, but not Sinn Fein, the largest party representing nationalists who want a united Ireland.

McGuinness, who is deputy first minister of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government, is a hero to republican hardliners, but has long been a hate figure to Unionists, many of whom harbor deep suspicions about his past.

He admits he was on the front line in the war with British forces, including on Bloody Sunday in 1972 when troops shot dead 13 unarmed protesters, but says he never killed anyone.

A British report said that McGuinness probably was armed with a submachinegun on Bloody Sunday, but did nothing to provoke the massacre. He has said he left the IRA in 1974, but most historians believe he was active for most of its campaign.

For the queen, the Northern Ireland conflict has long had a personal edge. Her cousin Lord Mountbatten was killed in an IRA attack in 1979 with three others, including his 14-year-old grandson, when his boat was blown up while he was on holiday in the Irish Republic.

More than 1,000 members of the British security forces were among 3,600 killed during the 30 years of violence.

"TERRIBLY HURT BY BRITISH STATE VIOLENCE"

"I represent people that have been terribly hurt by British state violence over the course of many years," McGuinness said in a video interview that Irish journalist Eamonn Mallie posted on his website on Tuesday.

"But I am also big enough to understand that Queen Elizabeth has also lost a loved one and of course there are families in Britain. Mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers, children of people who were sent here as British soldiers who lost their lives also," he said.

Sinn Fein, which has become increasingly popular south of the Irish border as the main party opposing an EU/IMF bailout that the republic needed when its property bubble burst, is keen to bolster its image as a mainstream party and distance itself from a violent past that alienates many southern voters.

Sinn Fein still wants a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of Britain, where its members still refuse to take their parliamentary seats, but in the short term its aim is to be in government north and south simultaneously.

Just last year Sinn Fein rejected invitations to attend events during the queen's symbolic visit to the Republic of Ireland last year, the first by a British monarch since Dublin won independence from London in 1921.

"I see this as an opportunity to give the Unionist people in the north a glimpse of what a united Ireland can look like and their role in it and how they can be accommodated," McGuinness said. "This is about deciding at a moment in history what is the right thing to do."

The simple announcement of the trip in advance, for the first time since the conflict began, shows the vast progress the province has made in recent years.

When the queen last visited for a jubilee celebration in 1977 she was forced to stay overnight on a ship at sea before flying to Belfast, parts of which were effectively controlled by the IRA.

Security remains tight with small splinter groups continuing to launch attacks against British targets, a threat the police say it at its highest level since peace in 1998.

skinned knee 224x300 Its the Season for Babies, Birthdays, and Skinned KneesWhy, hello there! Can you believe it?s the end of June already!? Summer is definitely in full swing!

Some of you may have been wondering where I?ve been for the past few weeks (or then again, you most likely didn?t even notice I was gone). Well, we?ve had a lot going on in our family!

First of all, and most exciting, we welcomed our sweet baby girl, Blair Grace, into our family! She was born at home on June 8th, and she is such an easy-going babe, who is adored by her older brother and sister.

baby11 300x224 Its the Season for Babies, Birthdays, and Skinned Knees

Then, last week our little man turned 3! Because we knew his birthday would be close to the arrival of his new sister (I?m so glad they didn?t end up with the same birthday!), we didn?t plan anything big or extravagant. Just a small party with family, and he was perfectly happy.

brenbday3 213x300 Its the Season for Babies, Birthdays, and Skinned Knees

It?s hard for me to believe that I have a three year old boy. I?m a little apprehensive, because from my experience with our older daughter, the age of three was worse than two ? and his two has been pretty rough the last few months. But, I?m also excited to continue to watch how this little boy grows and changes over the coming year.

And finally, we?ve just been trying to enjoy summer as much as we can, even with a new little babe. We went to the beach last weekend for the first time this summer, and we?ve been spending as much time outside as possible, which of course means plenty of falls and scrapes and skinned knees! Right now my son has three different scrapes on one knee from different falls.

I can?t wait to share with you more about what we?ve been up to as a family, but I?m still basking in the newness of my little one, and trying to figure out how in the world I?m going to manage these three kiddos this summer. So, I?ll be back with more next week, including super cute pics of Brenden in his new role as big brother, and some musings on discipline and toddlers, which has been on my mind a lot lately.

What have you been filling your days with this summer??

It's Never ?Just? A Movie (Or TV Show, Or Entertainment, Or?) | The ...

This morning io9 posted my essay/review about Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter wherein I criticized the movie for being a White Guilt Fantasy and full of fail. Predictably, the site?s many commenters rose up in protest of my assessment ? which I?ll get to in a separate post ? and also whipped out the tried and true ?But it?s just a movie, you?re not supposed to take it so seriously!? line and variations thereof. Looking through the archives, I don?t think I?ve posted a rebuttal to this line of thinking yet, and now?s a good time since I see many clicks over from io9 today.

The bottom line on this issue is simple: If you think that a piece of media such as a movie, TV show, book, or song is merely entertainment and ingest said media without giving any thought to how it influences or shapes you or the culture you exist in, You Are A Sheep.

What!? You cry. Again:

You. Are. A. Sheep.

Don?t worry, you?re not alone. There are millions of sheep like you in America. You spend most of your day listening to terrible music because it?s there, watching terrible television at night because it?s on, and spending extra money going out to terrible movies because you?re trained to.

I?m sure that you actually enjoy these forms of entertainment. The music has a beat you can dance to, the TV shows have some hot people and maybe some angst or whatever, and the movies have explosions or hot people kissing or some cartoon violence. And hey, these things are made to be enjoyed. Even things classified as ?high art? are meant to be enjoyed and people should enjoy them.

The thing that makes you a sheep is that you aren?t aware of how these media products affect you. Oh, I?m sure you?ll say they don?t and it?s stupid to say that TV makes you believe things you don?t really believe. You?ll bring up Tipper Gore and the bugaboo of video games being spuriously linked to violence. I bet you read that in a newspaper somewhere or on a blog that doesn?t challenge your already formed world view.

Okay, okay, I?ll put aside the snarky put downs for a few paragraphs. I can see it?s making you mad.

But honestly, if you don?t spend any time in your life thinking about the messages and world view media presents to you, how can you claim to be anything but a sheep? I?m not even talking about high levels of media criticism here, I?m simply talking about pausing for a moment and being conscious about what your favorite TV show or the latest blockbuster is about on a sub-surface level.

That doesn?t mean you have to take the joy out of your viewing or listening time. You can still be entertained. You should just also be aware.

Because make no mistake, your media is delivering a message to your brain. It?s up to you whether that message flows in there unimpeded and unexamined or if it swirls around in conscious consideration. Movies, television, music, literature and art are products of our culture that are both informed by and inform said culture.

Thus, media might promote stereotypes about women or people of color or a particular religion and do it in such a way that it either plays into already existing stereotypes and prejudices or may even help to create them. You let that pass into your brain unexamined and you may start to believe the stereotypes are real and form the prejudices the media promotes. And you?ll do it without a conscious thought.

It?s never just a show or a movie or a book. Media is always presenting you with a version of the world as imagined by the creator or creators behind it. That?s not always bad, for sure. Sometimes it?s an awesome and amazing view of the world. It?s up to you to make that determination. To say: this is sketchy! Or: This is how I want the world to be!

Another thing to keep in mind is that the backers of mass media are often presenting you with a worldview they really hope you just accept and don?t question, examine or deviate from. This is why the White Guilt Fantasy prevails so well in Hollywood. It?s right up there with the view that women never do anything important, that they exist only to be objectified or to glorify men.

If you don?t see that mass media is sending this any other harmful messages, then you?re not paying attention.

That is what I want you to do, media consumers: pay attention. You don?t have to deeply analyze everything and you don?t have to stop enjoying the things you love. Even if those things are problematic. Humans are capable of being nuanced creatures. You can find fault with a TV show or movie yet still have love for it, or parts of it.

This is how I maintain my love of Doctor Who and why I?ve seen The Avengers 4 times. There are major problems with both of those media entities, and I have no problem acknowledging and even poking at them. But I also let them fill me with squee.

Unlike most white Americans, I can?t afford to be a sheep in our current media landscape. Most of the messages media perpetuates are specifically harmful to me and people I love. I have to pay attention. Perhaps you don?t have to. I?m just saying that you should.

Honestly, do you want to be a sheep for your whole life? Just doing and feeling and thinking what the TV box tells you to?

More yammering about Yammer. Yammer calls itself ?the enterprise social network.? More than one source has described Yammer as a Facebook for business. Microsoft describes its new acquisition as technology that business both loves and needs. The purchase seems a confirmation of the importance of social networking to the business community, something analysts say Microsoft has been slow to deliver. DealBook

A gated community. Certainly businesses are already using social media ranging from Facebook to LinkedIn for everything from marketing to networking, and in truth, sometimes as a bit of both. Yammer introduces a more gated community, but the question is whether businesses will see the added value of private online networking when so many other options already exist. CNNMoney

Timing Is Everything

Riding the wave. Yammer was created four years ago when social media was just kid?s stuff, said company CEO David Sacks in the official announcement confirming Microsoft?s acquisition of his company. The plan was to create a networking solution for business, a wave that Sacks believes the company is still riding today. The purchase can be seen as an increased focus on cloud-based services with roots in popular consumer products. Tech Crunch

Late to the party. Yammer?s purchase allows Microsoft, and perhaps business networking in general, to catch up with consumer social media solutions like Twitter and Facebook. Microsoft tools like SharePoint have lagged far behind in terms of adoption, and it?s thought by some pundits that the new deal between Yammer and Microsoft will help online business networking catch up. Pieces in the puzzle. Business customers are likely to see Yammer incorporated into Microsoft?s Office 365 as part of the software company?s overall offerings. The product will become part of a package that includes an increasing number of tools including Skype, SharePoint, and Dynamics, all adding to the kinds of business services the company can offer. Other Social Media Trends

Marketing mavens. While business networking is catching up to its consumer counterpart, social media sites ranging from Facebook to YouTube have become the domain of marketing, even more than networking it seems. Regular dispatches on social media marketing tips have become commonplace and give hints on where this side of the social networking revolution is headed. Venture Beat

Apple gives a Yelp. So popular are social review and check-in sites these days, that Apple has decided to feature this one in its latest iPhone Maps App. With so many iPhone users accessing these social media tools, it?s a foregone conclusion that businesses those users rely upon will be taking social tools a lot more seriously. Bloomberg

Making the time for social. While big money is spent at the upper end of the social networking food chain, time is the critical investment for entrepreneurs interested in using free consumer social media options to market and network for their businesses. A recent survey suggests 24 percent of small business owners say they don?t have the time for social media, indicating there?s a competitive advantage for those who do. Street Fight

Brain trace 'can detect autism'

A simple brain trace can identify autism in children as young as two years old, scientists believe.

A US team at Boston Children's Hospital say EEG traces, which record electrical brain activity using scalp electrodes, could offer a diagnostic test for this complex condition.

EEG clearly distinguished children with autism from other peers in a trial involving nearly 1,000 children.

Experts say more work is needed to confirm the BMC Medicine study results.

Early detection

There are more than 500,000 people with autism in the UK.

Autism is a spectrum disorder, which means that it is not a single condition and will affect individuals in different ways.

Commonly, people with autism have trouble with social interaction and can appear locked in their own worlds.

It can be a difficult condition to diagnose and can go undetected for years.

EEG might offer a way to check for the same condition in younger siblings?

End Quote Dr Frank Duffy Lead investigator

The latest study found 33 specific EEG patterns that appeared to be linked to autism.

These patterns consistently spotted autism in children across a range of age groups, spanning from two to 12 years old.

Hallmark brain activity

The researchers repeated their analysis 10 times, splitting up their study group (children with a medical diagnosis of autism and children with no signs of autism) in different ways.

Around 90% of the time, the EEG patterns could correctly detect the children diagnosed with autism.

The team now plan to repeat their study in children with Asperger's syndrome - one particular subset of autism. Typically, people with Asperger's have higher-than-average intelligence and struggle less than people with other types of autism with their speech.

Dr Frank Duffy who is leading the investigation said the work could help determine if Asperger's should be thought of as an entirely separate condition.

And it could point the way to determining if younger siblings of children with autism are likely to develop the same condition themselves.

"It is a great cause of anxiety when an older sibling develops autism.

"EEG might offer a way to check for the same condition in younger siblings in advance of them having symptoms."

EEG could also be used to track what effect different autism treatments are having on the condition, he said.

Caroline Hattersley of The National Autistic Society said: "We welcome any research that may help us to understand autism better and improve diagnosis times for those with the condition.

"In a recent survey we commissioned, 50% of people with autism and their families said it was difficult to get a diagnosis and 55% said the process took too long.

"While further testing of EEG scans is still required, any tools that help identify autism at a younger age could potentially improve a person's quality of life by allowing the right support to be put in place earlier."
