News Summary: Corn prices climb on relentless heat

RELENTLESS SUMMER: Corn raced to a record high price as the hot, dry weather relentlessly pounded crops. Soybeans also rose. Expectations continue to mount that harvests will be smaller than anticipated for both crops.

PUMP IT UP: Natural gas jumped 6.6 percent as utilities bought more of the fuel to generate electricity during the hot summer. The recent jump in prices probably won't impact utility bills because utilities lock in prices to protect themselves.

MIXED BAG: Prices for gold, silver, wheat and gasoline rose. Oil, heating oil and copper prices fell.

Brooklyn Blue Storm baseball team makes New York proud - even with third place finish

They returned without a trophy, but lots of reasons to be proud. .

The Brooklyn Blue Storm, - the scrappy team of 8- and 9-year-olds who won the hearts of Daily News and raised more than $25,000 to attend a championship tournament in Georgia - did New Yorkers proud by placing third.

The team of 13 lost in a semi-final to a Georgian team on Saturday, but the pint-sized players were ecstatic to have even gotten the chance to compete in the tournament.

"These kids are going home with an experience they will never forget," said Coach Daniel Corona, 27. "I want to thank New York City for being behind us."

The 13-member team didn?t have enough money to make the trip just two weeks ago, but were able to fly in style after News readders donated.

"The kids felt like little rock stars out there. It was something special, representing New York City at that level," said Corona.

The Blue Storm came out strong in the first game of the tournament, handedly beating a team from New Mexico, 17-0.

The team then suffered its first loss of the season in a tight 3-0 game, falling to a Puerto Rican team that went on to win the whole tournament.

"It was like a battle of the titans on the field," said Corona. "The loss against Puerto Rico was the best (game played by 8-year-olds) I will ever witness in my life."

The Blue Storm still qualified for the semi-finals - but then had to confront 105-degree heat and the loss of two players who got sick. The Brooklyn's team lost to the home-town Georgia Yard Dogs, 13-3.

Although disappointed, the Blue Storm showed class by sticking around for the championship game and was the first team on the field to congratulate the eventual winners.

"It was really great to get this far and go to Georgia. It was an experience of a life-time," said Antonio DiGrigoli, 9.

"It was a dream come true," said Jakob Alers, 8. "We're going to take it home next year for Brooklyn."

(AP) ? Police in Miami were searching Sunday for a man accused of shooting at least three people in an apparent domestic dispute and who has said he will not surrender.

The victims' injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Erin Cash, 23, was wanted on charges of attempted murder.

Miami-Dade Police Det. William Moreno said the incident started when officers responded to a call at 8 a.m. from a woman who claimed she had been beaten by Cash, her child's father.

Cash then fled the scene with the couple's 3-year-old son and threatened to harm the mother and child, Moreno said. Cash later dropped off the boy at his mother's house unharmed.

Police said Cash then drove around looking for his girlfriend's brother and began firing shots once he found him. Another brother and a bystander were also shot as Cash continued shooting, police said.

The car was left abandoned at the home address listed for Cash. The detective said Cash told them he would not surrender.

LeBron James offers sneak peek to NBA play in Olympics

Jul 29, 2012; London, United Kingdom; USA forward LeBron James (6) during the men's basketball preliminary against France during the 2012 London Olympic Games at the Basketball Arena. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

LeBron James' passing catalyzed Team USA's surge to pull away against France in the opening Olympic game Sunday. He made a spectacular bounce-pass to a streaking Kevin Durant in the opening minutes, but found players open for dunks and 3-point shots to lengthen the Team USA lead later in the game. James was especially effective at passing out of the post, which he easily did when he met Tony Parker on a switch. In the end, James dominated the game with just six shot attempts. He registered a team-high eight assists in just 25 minutes of playing time, emerging as the playmaker on a team with Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

Did the best basketball player on the planet offer a sneak peek into how he'll play with the Miami Heat this upcoming season? While it's safe to say that James will attempt more than six shots when he has "Miami" emblazoned on his jersey instead of "USA," the spacing Team USA provided with some of its lineups could certainly resemble the Heat's style of play this season.

Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Tyson Chandler is the only true center on this team, yet only played 11 minutes. Although his absence in the first quarter allowed Tony Parker to drive into the lane with impunity, Team USA becomes such a high-octane offensive team when Kevin Love or even James plays as the de facto five. (As an aside, Chris Bosh would've added a lot to Team USA if he played this summer. He anchored Miami's defense in the 2012 Finals and provides a diverse offensive repertoire. Neither Chandler nor Love is a two-way player).

Star-divide

The Heat will have a two-way big man when the season begins Oct. 30, however. And although Chris Bosh will likely play less of the five in the regular season than he will in the playoffs, Miami will still use lineups with him as the pivot before the postseason. The Heat will be able to run offense similar to that of Team USA against France. James will have the ball in his hands with a few players with a few dead-eye 3-point shooters waiting for the pass. Miami did that in the Finals, but Bosh's playoff injury prevented the team from running that in other rounds. It may be Ray Allen taking the open 3 instead of Durant. It may be Rashard Lewis running the pick-and-pop instead of Love. The Heat don't have the depth that Team USA has, but they're a damn good team. As strange as this sounds, Miami's shooting guard - Dwyane Wade - was the worst shooter on the team's starting lineup in the Finals. And that was before the Heat added Allen and Lewis.

Sports fans saw great basketball Sunday morning. What should make other teams tremble is the fact that the Miami Heat have the potential to play that type of great basketball night-in, night-out.

Bafin widens scrutiny of German banks amid Libor: sources

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Markets regulator Bafin has extended its scrutiny of German banks by investigating more lenders following a global interest rate rigging scandal, sources have told Reuters.

Eight German banks, which participate or have participated in the rate for the euro zone, known as Euribor, were ordered to submit details of how they calculate the interest rate and monitor its mechanisms, according to the regulatory sources, who are familiar with the details of the investigation.

Bafin set a deadline of last Thursday for the submissions to be made but the results of the investigation are not yet known, the sources said.

It was not clear when the results of the probe would be available.

German banks participating in Euribor include Deutsche Bank , Commerzbank , DZ Bank , LBBW , BayernLB , Helaba , NordLB and Landesbank Berlin .

Bafin is already conducting a so-called special probe - the most severe form of investigation it can undertake - into Deutsche Bank over suspected manipulation of interbank lending rates.

Investigators in the United States, Europe and Japan are examining more than a dozen big banks over suspected rigging of the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor).

The Libor rates, compiled from estimates by large banks of how much they believe they have to pay to borrow from each other, are used to determine interest rates on trillions of dollars worth of contracts around the world.

German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Sunday that Bafin was planning to raise the number of supervisors for Deutsche Bank to three or four from two.

Bafin declined to comment.

Do i Love Too Hard? - ADDer World ADD ADHD Online Network ...

It's the way relationships work. ?Often, people actively love not to show their partner that they love them, but to try to make sure their partner loves them in return. ?It becomes a cycle of insecurity vs. security. ?Your partner doesn't demonstrate their love for you for whatever reason. ?You feel insecure about your partner's love as a result, so you show more love in the order to remind them that you love them. ?This makes them feel secure in your love for them, so they don't feel motivated to show their love because they are secure in the relationship. ?

But you feel insecure, so you show more love. ?Consequently, they feel even more secure and continue to coast on not showing their love because everything feels great to them. ?Their love tank is full.

But your tank is empty, so you show more love hoping they'll reciprocate and draining your tank even more. ?Eventually there needs to be a change. ?My guess is that the most common results for you are: ?

1) ?You get in a ?fight or end the relationship seemingly out of the blue to your partner, telling them you don't think they love you. ?This is probably devastating to them because they think everything is fine.

2) ?You pull back emotionally. ?You become less expressive of you love and start to resent your partner. ?This usually leads to them becoming more expressive of their love (because they are now the insecure one in the pattern described above), which comforts you. ?You then return to your overly expressive ways and the pattern soon reverses to where your tank is again empty. ?And the cycle resumes again.

My advice: ?When you're in the midst of pulling back, be aware of why and talk to your partner about why you're doing it and what you need. ?Then, find a new, lower intensity manner and pace to express your love. ?

Think about it: ?If you always say "I Love You" before they do, it will never feel like they're really telling you they love you. ?It'll always seem merely reciprocal. ?I don't just mean the first time it's said, I mean upon first seeing them for the day, at the end of phone calls, etc... ?Squash the ADHD impulsivity and wait for your partner to tell you they love you. ?I bet they will. ? And if you hang up without it being said the first few times, know that they're feeling more insecure about it than you are. ?It'll work itself out and soon you'll both be expressing your love more evenly.

I'm not advocating you to play games here, I'm just trying to point out a likely pattern you're in and giving you a way to change it. ?Above all communicate with your partner about your needs. ?But know that there's a limit to the amount of neediness men can show in a relationship. Culturally, women can be as needy as they want. ?It's less so for men. ?If we get too needy, it damages the relationship. ?So if you're in the middle of one, it will take careful tuning to realign things to where you want them. ?

In the example above, you could say, "I feel like I never give you the chance to tell me you love me. ?That's unfair, because I know you do. ?So, I'm going to try to lay off saying it so much to give you the chance to bring it up." ?But I wouldn't go any further than that.

You might also want to read "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman. ?He's a Christian Minister, but the religious nature of the book is limited. ?I'm an agnostic Catholic and my wife is an atheist Jew and we both liked it. ?It really helped us communicate with regard to our needs. ?That's where I got the "Love Tank" metaphor, in fact.

Hope this helps.

Brendan

The crystals react with the salivary gland secretions stored in their abdomens to create a droplet of toxic goo that can kill or paralyze worker termites from another species,?Labiotermes labralis, an experiment revealed. [Video of Exploding Suicide Termites]

So-called white workers also have the salivary secretions but lack the blue crystals. These workers are less aggressive, slower to burst in battle and the substance they produce is not as effective?against their enemies.

The researchers transplanted the crystals from blue workers onto white workers, and found the white workers became more deadly once they had the crystals.??

They also determined that the blue workers were older by measuring the length of the edge of the termites' mandibles. Termites chew on wood and as they age their mandibles wear down. The larger the blue crystals on a termite, the more blunt its mandibles, the researchers found.

Among?social insects?like termites, the practice of sending older workers into battle is common, researcher Yves Roisin of Universit? Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium said in a podcast interview released by the journal Science, where this research is detailed.

"[Among] such insects of course the individual doesn't really count or it counts by the work it can actually do for the colony, and when they are old and probably less efficient they are more likely to sacrifice themselves," Roisin said.

However, the blue workers' suicide gear is highly unusual in the world of?insect warfare, because the combination of blue crystals and salivary secretions make it a two-component system, Roisin said, adding that it is also exceptional that one component (the crystals) is carried outside of the body.

So far, the researchers have seen this behavior in this species only, but they hope to see if its relatives do something similar, he said.

The research appears in Friday's (July 27) issue of the journal Science.

Swizz Beatz Addresses Megaupload.com Legal Situation - Hip Hop

(AllHipHop News) Swizz Beatz has commented on the legal situation involving Megaupload.com, a company that listed the superproducer as CEO before it was shut down for piracy in January.

Last week, the government revealed that they were officially looking into Swizz Beatz and his role as CEO of the company, as they attempt to bring a trial against Megaupload.com in the United States.

Several top executives at Megaupload.com were arrested on January 19, on charges of copyright infringement and racketeering.

Federal prosecutors claim Megaupload.com generated over $175 million in illegal proceeds from copyrighted works, costing the entertainment industry over $500 million in lost revenue.

?I?m a fan of music. I?m a fan of people that work hard. I would never be a part of anything that?s taking from an artist when I fight so hard to give so much to the artists,? Swizz Beatz said in an interview with AlLindstrom.com.

?I was giving the artists 90% of they s**t. Sometimes when something is so powerful and people can?t control it that type of attack happens,? Swizz Beatz reasoned. ?You see that happen with multiple things in life. Things that are so powerful, they get shut down unexplainably.?

Swizz Beatz, born Kaseem Dean, may have a point.

Just last week, Megaupload.com?s billionaire founder, Kim DotCom, claimed that U.S. Vice President Joe Biden personally ordered the company?s shutdown.

Kim DotCom claimed that Vice President Biden met with the head of the Motion Picture Association of America over the issue of piracy.

?I do know from a credible source that it was Joe Biden, the best friend of former Senator and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) boss Chris Dodd, who ordered his former lawyer and now State Attorney Neil MacBride to take Mega down,? Kim DotCom told TorrentFreak.com in a separate interview.

Last week, Kim DotCom scored a victory in the case, when a New Zealand judge ruled that FBI warrants obtained to search his mansion in Auckland were illegal.

Swizz Beatz, who has worked with artists like Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and Chris Brown and has won three Grammys, defended his character.

Although he is being associated with a file-sharing battle similar to those launched against past services like Napster, Audiogalaxy, LimeWire, and others, Swizz Beatz denied any wrong doing.

?I?m in the business of inspiring people. And I can?t be in the business of inspiring people if I?m so-called robbing my friends,? Swizz Beatz said. ?And my friends know that, that?s why ain?t nobody speak out and say any clown s**t about me. They know my character and they know what it is.?

Sandusky shower abuse victim to sue Penn State

(AP) ? For months, the identity of the boy who was sexually assaulted in the locker room showers by Jerry Sandusky was one of the biggest mysteries of the Penn State scandal. Now, for the first time, a man has come forward publicly to claim he was that boy, and is threatening to sue the university.

The man's lawyers said Thursday they have done an extensive investigation and gathered "overwhelming evidence" on details of the abuse by Sandusky, the former assistant football coach convicted of using his position at Penn State and as head of a youth charity to molest boys over a period of 15 years.

Jurors convicted Sandusky last month of offenses related to so-called Victim 2 largely on the testimony of Mike McQueary, who was a team graduate assistant at the time and described seeing the attack.

"Our client has to live the rest of his life not only dealing with the effects of Sandusky's childhood sexual abuse, but also with the knowledge that many powerful adults, including those at the highest levels of Penn State, put their own interests and the interests of a child predator above their legal obligations to protect him," the lawyers said in a news release.

They did not name their client, and The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sex crimes without their consent.

The university said it was taking the case seriously but would not comment on pending litigation.

University President Rodney Erickson and the board of trustees "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims," a school spokesman said.

The statement from the man's attorneys said Victim 2 suffered "extensive sexual abuse over many years both before and after the 2001 incident Michael McQueary witnessed."

McQueary testified in December at a hearing that he had seen Sandusky and a boy, both naked, in a team shower after hearing skin-on-skin slapping sounds.

"I would have described that it was extremely sexual and I thought that some kind of intercourse was going on," McQueary said.

McQueary, who estimated the boy to be around 10 years old, reported the abuse to school officials, including Paterno, but none of them told police. In a recent report conducted by former FBI Director Louis Freeh and commissioned by Penn State, the investigators excoriated Paterno and the other administrators for not attempting to identify Victim 2, saying it showed "a striking lack of empathy."

Trustees fired Paterno, who has since died, because he failed to do more about claims against Sandusky, and the scathing independent review said several top school officials looked the other way because they were afraid of bad publicity. The NCAA has vacated 112 Penn State wins.

In a pair of voicemails recorded last year, released with the statement and posted online by the lawyers, a voice that's purportedly Sandusky's expresses his love and says he wants to express his feelings "up front."

The voicemails are dated Sept. 12 and Sept. 19, less than two months before the former Penn State coach was arrested on child sex abuse charges. Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 sex abuse counts and awaits sentencing.

The second voicemail asks whether Victim 2 would like to attend Penn State's next game.

Sandusky left "numerous" voicemails for their client that fall, the attorneys said.

Sandusky has said very little publicly since he gave interviews in the weeks after his arrest and did not testify at his trial.

Before the trial, defense attorney Joe Amendola said he had met with a man he believed he might be Victim 2 and the man told him he had not been abused by Sandusky. Amendola said he was not convinced and did not intend to subpoena him, but also said Sandusky himself was insistent they had the right person.

The statement from Victim 2's lawyers leaves many questions unanswered, including whether he had been in contact with prosecutors before or during the trial, whether he remembers McQueary, and whether he is the same person who met with Amendola.

"Jerry Sandusky's abuse of Victim 2 and other children is a direct result of a conspiracy to conceal Sandusky's conduct and the decisions by top Penn State officials that facilitated and enabled his access to victims," the statement read. "We intend to file a civil lawsuit against Penn State University and others and to hold them accountable for the egregious and reckless conduct that facilitated the horrific abuse our client suffered."

The statement did not say when the lawsuit would be filed or contain details on what redress the plaintiff is seeking. The lawyers said they would not have further comment, and messages left for their spokesman were not immediately returned.

Several messages seeking comment from Amendola and Sandusky's other lawyer, Karl Rominger, were not immediately returned.

Prosecutors had said on several occasions they did not know the identity of the boy, and they offered no reaction to the lawyers' announcement Thursday.

"We can't comment, given both our ongoing criminal prosecutions and our ongoing investigation," said Nils Frederiksen, spokesman for the attorney general's office.

The attorneys who released the statement include several based in Philadelphia and in State College, home to Penn State's main campus ? where the shower assault took place. They also represent three other young men Sandusky was convicted of abusing but have not filed any lawsuits.

A second accuser has filed paperwork indicating an additional complaint is in the works, while other lawyers also have indicated they represent young men with potential claims.

This week Penn State's general liability insurer sought to deny or limit coverage for Sandusky-related claims. Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association Insurance argued that Penn State withheld key information needed to assess risk.

In June, after Sandusky was convicted, the university said it hoped to quickly compensate victims and would reach out to their lawyers. Penn State spokesman Dave La Torre declined to comment on anything related to the victims and any settlement discussions.

Obama, Romney differ over guns after Colo. attack

(AP) ? The politics of guns leapt to the top of the presidential race Wednesday, as President Barack Obama embraced some degree of control of weapons sales and Republican Mitt Romney seemed to suggest an alleged mass killer in Colorado had obtained his weapons illegally even though he hadn't.

Speaking to a mostly black audience in New Orleans, Obama said he would seek a consensus on combating violence. He said some responsibility also rests with parents, neighbors and teachers to ensure that young people "do not have that void inside them."

Obama's remarks came five days after the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 dead and dozens wounded. He pledged to work with lawmakers of both parties to stop violence ? not only the sudden massacres that have bedeviled the nation, but also the steady drip of urban crime that has cost many young lives.

The president called for stepped-up background checks for people who want to buy guns and restrictions to keep mentally unbalanced individuals from buying weapons. He said those steps "shouldn't be controversial, they should be common sense."

Romney, meanwhile, said many of the weapons deployed by the shooting suspect in Colorado were possessed illegally and that changing laws wouldn't prevent gun-related tragedies. His comments added a confusing layer to the debate because authorities say the firearms that James Holmes allegedly used to kill 12 people were obtained legally.

"This person shouldn't have had any kind of weapons and bombs and other devices, and it was illegal for him to have many of those things already," Romney told NBC News in an interview in London. "But he had them. And so we can sometimes hope that just changing the law will make all bad things go away. It won't."

Authorities say Holmes broke no laws when he bought an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and Glock handgun, and he passed the required background checks.

Aides to Romney said the former Massachusetts governor was alluding only to homemade bombs, reportedly used as attempted booby-traps in Holmes' apartment, when he spoke of items "illegal for him to have."

"The illegality the governor is referencing is the ordinances, the devices that were in the home," said campaign spokesman Danny Diaz. "He was not referencing the weapons carried to the theater."

In a separate interview with KRNV-TV in Nevada, Romney seemed more precise. He said Holmes "had various incendiary devices, bombs of some kind. The idea that saying those things, of course, were illegal, but he had them, simply passing laws does not make the threat of an individual who is deranged, disappear."

Romney's campaign acknowledged Wednesday that Holmes' gun purchases apparently were legal.

Aurora authorities disassembled the booby traps in the apartment, and they did not explode. It's unclear if the suspect obtained the bomb materials illegally, but it's against Colorado law to build an explosive device.

NBC News anchor Brian Williams pressed Romney about his tenure as Massachusetts governor, when the presumptive GOP nominee signed a bill that banned some assault weapons like the type Holmes is alleged to have used. At the time, Romney described such guns as "instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people."

Asked if he stood by those comments, Romney mentioned the Massachusetts ban but said he didn't think current laws needed to change.

"I don't happen to believe that America needs new gun laws. A lot of what this ... young man did was clearly against the law. But the fact that it was against the law did not prevent it from happening," Romney said.

Obama, speaking to the National Urban League, said, "We should leave no stone unturned and recognize that we have no greater mission that keeping our young people safe."

His speech represented a bookend to a four-day trip that began Sunday in Colorado, where Obama visited with survivors of the massacre.

"For every Columbine or Virginia Tech, there are dozens gunned down on the streets of Chicago and Atlanta, here in New Orleans," he said. "For every Tucson or Aurora, there is daily heartbreak over young Americans shot in Milwaukee or Cleveland."

Obama said every heartbreaking tragedy creates an outcry for action. "Too often those efforts are defeated by politics and by lobbying and eventually by the pull of our collective attention elsewhere," he said.

Obama said he believes in the Second Amendment's protection of gun rights and that that hunting and shooting are part of a "cherished national tradition."

"I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that an AK-47 belongs in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals," he said. "That they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities.

While he called for efforts to keep criminals and fugitives and mentally unbalanced individuals from buying weapons, Obama also said he was undertaking efforts without Congress to create prevention and intervention programs that "steer young people away from a life of gang violence toward the safety and promise of classroom."

But he also added: "We must also understand that when a child opens fire on other children, there's a hole in his heart that no government can fill."

While the Aurora shootings stunned the nation, Obama's hometown of Chicago has symbolized the urban death toll with a surge in violence that has also captured widespread attention. Chicago homicides are up nearly 38 percent from last year, dramatized by the death of a 7-year-old girl who was gunned down last month while selling snow cones near her house.

Too Much Medical Care? - NYTimes.com

A few years ago, my daughter sprained her ankle at dance camp. What happened next offers a glimpse into some of the problems in our nation?s health care system.

For years, we?ve been hearing that the United States spends more on health care than any other country, even as it lags far behind other countries in terms of quality of care.

The numbers are staggering. Health spending in the United States neared $2.6 trillion in 2010 ? that?s 10 times the $256 billion spent in 1980. The Institute of Medicine estimates that in 2009, the most recent year for which data are available, the country spent about $210 billion on unnecessary medical services.

Broken down, this means that the United States spends about $8,000 per person annually on health care ? that?s about 50 percent more than Norway and Switzerland. In the United States, hospital stays are far more expensive than those in other countries, averaging about $18,000 per discharge, compared with less than $10,000 in Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, France and Germany.

Excess Healthcare Spending

  • Unnecessary Services = $210 billion
  • Inefficiently Delivered Services = 130 billion
  • Excess Administrative Costs = 190 billion
  • Prices that are Too High = 105 billion
  • Missed Prevention Opportunities = 55 billion
  • Fraud = $75 billion

But what do these numbers really mean to the average patient? What?s going on in the doctor?s offices and hospitals around the country to create such bloated spending?

That?s where my daughter?s ankle comes in. At the time, the injury seemed unremarkable. Her pediatrician suggested waiting it out, but after a month with no improvement, I sought a second opinion from a sports medicine specialist, who ordered an M.R.I., but ended up referring her to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.

The specialist examined the ankle, ordered another M.R.I. as well as extensive blood work. After seven vials of blood, my daughter nearly passed out.

A week later the doctor called. Some of the blood work looked uncertain, and he wanted to retest. After several more vials of blood, the results remained ambiguous. Even so, my daughter was referred to an eye specialist and a pediatric rheumatologist, who ordered more blood work and a third M.R.I. At the end of the appointment, the doctor noticed my daughter?s crooked pinkie fingers and, oddly, ordered an X-ray of her hands. Five months after twisting an ankle, my otherwise healthy daughter limped out of the radiology office carrying X-rays of her hands. ?Mom,?? she said, ?my ankle still hurts.?

After years of reporting on health, I considered myself a well-informed patient, but it took my elementary-school daughter to state the obvious: She was the victim of too much medicine. Every new blood test, scan or X-ray raised new questions, which led to more lab work, scans and X-rays. I know the doctors had good intentions, but it?s a truism of modern medicine that the more you test and scan and look for problems, the more likely you are to find something wrong. My daughter?s case had spiraled out of control.

I canceled all her appointments with the various specialists, and went back to the sports doctor. We discussed a new approach that focused solely on pain relief. He consulted with my daughter?s pediatrician, and they agreed on a treatment. Within days, my daughter?s ankle had stopped throbbing, and soon she was back to sports and dancing. The cost of this ankle injury had reached well into the thousands of dollars ? I had lost track because it was all covered by my insurance.

Solving the problem of excessive health care spending, while finding ways to offer better care to those without insurance, is arguably one of the most pressing issues facing our country. Over the coming weeks, I want to explore the reasons behind our troubled health care system from the perspective of the patient. Along the way, I?ll check in with various experts, from physicians on the front lines to policy experts searching for solutions, who can add their own insights to the discussion.

The goal will be to shed light on both the good and the bad in the American health care system and help set the health care agenda for the next president. The series will be part of a larger New York Times project called The Agenda, which will focus on some of the most critical issues that the president and the next Congress will face in the coming months and years.

To get started, I want to hear from you. Have you or has a family member been subjected to too much medicine? Please share your experience below, and join us in the coming weeks as we explore our health system from a patient?s point of view.

Living in a leaded home | Home Improvement Remodeling Contractor

An old home

There are nearly? 15,900 homes here in Boise Idaho that were given the ?Completely leaded until proven otherwise? stigma by the EPA RRP rule in April, 2010. Other than becoming older, these homes are not any different than they ever were. It dawned on me that I live in a leaded home, and there hasn?t been much discussion about how to live safely in a leaded home.

Here are some little known things that every homeowner of a pre-1978 home should know.

First off Lead is a mined mineral that unlike other minerals which are vital to our bodies, has no beneficial properties to living things. Lead was not only used in paint, It was added to gasoline for years and although outlawed in automotive fuel is still used in aviation and in some developing countries. It also ended up in a type of insulation that is no longer available called Vermiculite, but is in lots of attics. It was a common additive to paint and colorings in this country for years until outlawed. Sadly it is still mostly unregulated in third world countries.

During developmental stages of life the body sees lead as just another mineral building block like calcium or iron. In a pinch it will use lead instead to try and construct a neurological system. The only problem is that it doesn?t work.

Depending upon the stage of growth in the brain that the lead is introduced we see failures or disabilities develop in that area. This is why lead is especially bad for pregnant women, children under the age of 6years old, and pets, who are incidentally three times more susceptible to the poison.

Lead based paint was used because of it?s ability to last a long time, It had excellent UV protective properties and discouraged mold growth. The down side is that it is failing now and it does so in several ways.

Dutch Boy Paint

Leaded paint peels when the primer lets go or the wood shrinks beneath it. It also fails when there are problems like leaks or moisture gets into the wood and releases the paint. lead paint also dries out and chalks releasing particles down to the nearest horizontal surface.

A neurological system built with lead doesn?t work correctly. Many of the symptoms may be subtle, others very obvious. One of the most damning is the potential loss of life long intelligence IE lower than potential IQ points. Unfortunately the links to medical and developmental maladies are not clearly linked, there is suspicion of links to ADD, autism, and still birth.

Lead gets into the system by inhaling or ingesting it.

Protection against ingested lead comes from:

  • Keeping horizontal surfaces clean.
  • Use a HEPA vacuum in your home, it captures the dust.
  • Making sure that developing bodies have a well rounded diet of foods that are rich in calcium and iron. (This is why malnourished children are more susceptible to lead poisoning.)
  • Using lead safe work practices whenever disturbing lead based paint
  • Not allowing mouthing of painted surfaces
  • Stabilizing lead painted surfaces with latex paint
  • Removing leaded components or covering them (In the case of siding)
  • Being careful in the Drip Line of the home.
  • Using leaded pottery to cook in.
  • Not washing vegetables prior to eating.
  • Avoiding contaminated foods and candies (from 2nd and 3rd world countries).

I had the fortune to speak with the remodeler who poisoned his own children during a? project he did on his own home. He was ashamed of what had happened. Although ignorant at the time, he is a strong advocate of Lead Safe Work Practices.

For adult exposure the symptoms are more subtle, Cold and flu like symptoms externally which are hard to pin to lead exposure but the laundry list of problems include sexual inability, hypertension along with memory loss and debilitating neurological issues.

Certified Firm

Another frequently asked question is about gardening around older homes, here is a link to a great articleon the issue from Oregon.

As a Remodeling Contractor in Boise Idaho, Levco Builders cares a lot about the health and safety of our clients our employees, everyone?s families and pets as well as our environment. Levco Builders is also a Lead Safe Firm registered with the EPA, we have educated ourselves and are fluent in the ins and outs of the RRP rule.

Driver of Breast Cancer Stem Cell Metastasis Found | Cancer Kick

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have found that a cancer gene linked to aggressive spread of the disease promotes breast cancer stem cells. The finding implies a new way to target the behavior of these lethal cells.

The finding involves the cancer gene RhoC, which has previously been shown to promote metastasis of many types of cancer. RhoC levels increase as breast cancer progresses and high levels of RhoC are associated with worse patient survival.

Cancer stem cells are the small number of cells within a tumor that are believed to fuel the tumor?s growth and spread. Researchers believe traditional chemotherapy and radiation treatments often become ineffective because they do not kill the cancer stem cells, and that the key to future treatments is to develop drugs that target and kill these cells.

This new study, which appears online in PLoS ONE, suggests a new way to get at the cancer stem cells.

?Targeting the specific molecular cogs driving the cancer stem cell machinery responsible for the cancer spreading has potential for future treatments. Eliminating cancer stem cells may ultimately be necessary to cure certain cancers, but in the meantime, we may be able to manage the cancer stem cell population and the invasive behaviors of these cells by disrupting the molecular machinery, using RhoC as a target,? says senior study author Sofia D. Merajver, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine and epidemiology at the University of Michigan and scientific director of the breast oncology program at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The researchers looked at breast cancer cell lines that were highly metastatic and cell lines from normal breast tissue. By inhibiting or overexpressing RhoC, they found that RhoC expression is necessary to cause metastasis in both cell lines, and that RhoC overexpression alone can cause metastasis. The researchers also tested this in mice and had similar results.

Merajver?s lab, in conjunction with other U-M researchers, is studying a novel small molecule drug to inhibit RhoC, which has shown promising initial results in the laboratory. The researchers are continuing to develop this inhibitor, which will require several years of additional testing in the laboratory before potentially advancing to clinical trials.

Sloths' 'lazy' sex life revealed

The hidden sexual habits of Hoffmann's two-toed sloths have been revealed by scientists.

Mating activity of the "lazy" mammals was analysed in Costa Rica to assess the effect of a sedentary lifestyle.

Ecologists discovered a mating system where male sloths did not monopolise females but did show signs of defending some territory.

The study could help scientists understand how to protect other species threatened with habitat fragmentation.

The findings were published in the journal Animal Behaviour.

"It's not a total free for all," said one of the team, Dr Zach Peery.

Although sloth physiology and anatomy is well understood, the behaviour of sloth species is not, said Dr Jonathan Pauli, who co-authored the University of Wisconsin study with Dr Zach Peery.

When sloths ruled the earth

Relatives of this two-toed Hoffmann's sloth once lived on the ground, rivalling the mammoths for size and had fearsome 50cm claws. From fossils, experts have learned more about the distant but formidable members of the sloth family.

"One of the real highlights...for a cryptic mammal like this is the ability for us... to almost get a census of these populations," he said.

The research was part of an ongoing monitoring programme in which males and females across the study site were located, tagged and genetically tested.

95 adult two-toed sloths, 32 subadults and 30 juveniles were captured and monitored for the study.

By testing for paternity and mapping the distribution of related individuals, the ecologists were able to piece together the population's mating behaviour.

The male home ranges contained an average of three females and the females usually appeared within the home range of more than one male.

The results showed that 36% of adult males sired offspring with at least two females, demonstrating that sloths are not monogamous.

"Because they're highly sedentary we thought that the males most probably wouldn't be able to vigorously defend a harem of multiple females," said Dr Zach Peery.

But the ecologists found evidence that the males monopolise space in certain core territorial areas, suggesting that their mating system is a complicated combination of polygyny, whereby one male monopolises many females, and promiscuity.

"They're not necessarily just puppy dogs, they will battle and we do find males with considerable facial scars so although there is overlap and although it's a somewhat more flexible mating system... there is structure to it," said Dr Peery.

There are a number of benefits to promiscuous mating systems for mammals, particularly from a female point of view, he said.

These range from the female not putting all of her "eggs in one basket with one male" to the reduced risk of infanticide.

"We are suggesting that the sedentary nature of sloths could be an additional reason," Dr Peery told BBC Nature.

The study site mirrors a type of habitat that is increasingly prevalent in central America, with a mixture of shade-grown cacao plantation, pasture, and fruit monoculture, which may prove an important combination for conservationists to understand in the future.

"There have been a number of different studies both in tropical forests in Asia and central America that have shown that biodiversity tends to be higher...in shade-grown agricultural systems," said Dr Peery.

The project is now turning its attention to the three-toed sloth which is found in the same area.

"If you can believe it, the three-toed sloth is even more sedentary and docile than the two-toed sloth," Dr Pauli told the BBC.

The "lazy" disposition of sloths makes them comparatively straightforward to study and they may hold the key to understanding how to protect other species that are threatened with habitat loss.

"Their dispersal across fragmented habitats is much lower so presumably they'll be a nice bellwether for other species," he said.
