Android this week: So I bought a Galaxy Note 2? ? Mobile - GigaOM

So I broke down and ordered a Galaxy Note 2 from overseas. Why spend the money when I have a Galaxy Nexus phone and Nexus 7 tablet? A video demo shows how Samsung is further bridging the mobile and traditional computing space and I bought in.

Regular readers of this weekly column know that I typically recap interesting Google Android news from the prior week. Occasionally, I make an exception to cover one specific Android item, and today, I?m doing just that. Why? I ordered a Galaxy Note 2 from overseas on Sunday morning and it should arrive within the week.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in greyThe new phone cost me a pretty penny ???449.98 ($727 US)?delivered from the UK to the U.S. ?? but I tend to buy unlocked devices off contract. I have an invitation to a Samsung press event in late October, which is likely to be the U.S. launch of the Galaxy Note 2 and if I were to buy one at full price from a US carrier, it would likely cost nearly as much anyway.

I certainly don?t need another smartphone ? I currently use a Galaxy Nexus with a $45 a month Straight Talk SIM ? but the idea of a device with a mix of phone and tablet form factors is intriguing to me. The original Galaxy Note did as well, but I didn?t feel it was enough of a change from my Galaxy Nexus to spend the money. This time around, I feel differently in terms of the form factor, hardware and Samsung?s updated TouchWiz software with more functionality for the included digital pen.

In fact, after watching this video demonstration, it hit me that Samsung is really blending mobile and desktop use-cases like never before and I decided to take the plunge:

A few examples from the demo illustrate what I?m talking about:

  • The new S-Pen and dual digitizer add a new hover view, similar to functionality provided by a mouse cursor on traditional computers. I originally thought this was gimmicky, but the video shows some smart uses. Hover over a calendar event and you get the details without the phone opening a completely new screen, for example.
  • The new multitasking feature that shows two apps on the screen at the same time reduces home button presses and app switching. Until recently, our smartphones and tablets have been single app at a time devices; that changes on the Galaxy Note 2 and previously, the Galaxy Note 10.1. Granted, only certain apps support this feature for now. Still, I see productivity potential here.
  • Related to the two apps on a screen?simultaneously?is the dock-like app launcher around the 2:07 mark in the video. There?s no need to tap a hardware button and scroll through pages of apps ? our traditional smartphone user interface ? when you can customize a floating dock and tap or drag an app for usage.

Galaxy Note 2 dimensionsI like that Samsung slimmed the width as compared to the original Galaxy Note. I found that device a smidge too wide for my hand. And the S-Pen was to small for me to use comfortably; the new one is longer and has a more ergonomic design. Along with these changes that further bridge the gap between desktop and mobile computing, the hardware on the Galaxy Note 2 is impressive; possibly the best for any Android phone at the moment.

The 1.6 GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos chip paired with 2 GB of memory ought to make this device blazing fast and it should be helped by the performance improvements found in Android 4.1. The 5.5-inch display uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, making the Galaxy Note 2 look like an oversized Galaxy S III. Gone is the PenTile?display in 1280 x 720 found on my Galaxy Nexus (which I find quite good); the Note 2 uses an HD Super AMOLED screen in the same resolution. Pixel density is down by comparison, but I suspect the lack of PenTile?will offset any clarity loss. And while I?m fine with the 5 megapixel camera found on my Galaxy Nexus, I?m looking forward to the 8 megapixel sensor and improved camera software in the Galaxy Note 2.

I?ll very likely keep my Galaxy Nexus, mainly because it gets software updates directly from Google as soon as they?re ready. Heck, I kept, and still have, my old Nexus One, purchased in January of 2010 for the same reason. It?s possible however, that a 5.5-inch phone that doubles as a pseudo-tablet could replace my Nexus 7 tablet. That?s one of the many questions I?ll be looking to answer for myself as I review the new Galaxy Note 2. Stay tuned for a video look at the device when it arrives, which of course will be followed up by a full review!

Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don't have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.

We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.

Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. You create your business plan, design a website, find someone to host your blog, build an auto responder, write and track your ads, create content, etc. You are ready and anxious to make sales, and nothing happens. It is like your seeds have been planted and you are waiting for the seeds to grow. But it is not happening fast enough.

Like nature, "growing" a successful online business from your home requires an understanding of cycles. The first cycle is "startup" which is defined by frenzied activity that is new and exciting because you are taking a bold step towards securing you financial independence. The second cycle is the "planting" of your business where you are initiating the promotional campaign necessary to generate a list of prospects that can be converted to loyal customers. The third cycle is the "harvest" where you experience actual sales revenue and profit from your efforts.

The timing of these cycles is what I believe discourages many who start their own home based businesses with the best of intentions. For me, the startup cycle was fun, energizing, and exciting. I love to learn new things and this phase was pure joy. Same with the planting cycle; nothing but positive energy and anticipation. In the first 6 months of my online business venture, I brought in a total of $20. All that time, effort, and money for twenty bucks?! This is where my vegetable garden experience helped.

From the time that we planted the seeds in our new vegetable garden, it took 6 weeks of daily watering and plucking weeds before we saw the earliest signs of seed germination. From that point, it was another 6 weeks of watering, weeding, and pest control before the garden actually started to take on the look of a garden that was going to produce results. Four months into it, we started taking out fresh organic vegetables and putting them on the dinner table. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.

Back to the business - Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn't if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.

Exclusive: North Korea's military to share power with Kim's heir

(This story from December 21, 2011 corrects the description of the source who appears in the first paragraph. An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the source previously predicted North Korea's first nuclear test in 2006. The corrected version of the description of the source appears in the third paragraph)

BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea will shift to collective rule from a strongman dictatorship after last week's death of Kim Jong-il, although his untested young son will be at the head of the ruling coterie, a source with close ties to Pyongyang and Beijing said.

The source added that the military, which is trying to develop a nuclear arsenal, has pledged allegiance to the untested Kim Jong-un, who takes over the family dynasty that has ruled North Korea since it was founded after World War Two.

It was impossible to verify the plan independently in North Korea, one of the world's most closed states, although the source has proved reliable in the past, predicting the ascent of Kim's uncle, Jang Song-thaek. Also, after North Korea announced its first nuclear test in 2006, the source gave Reuters exclusive details of the preparations for that test before it was conducted.

The comments are the first signal that North Korea is following a course that many analysts have anticipated -- it will be governed by a group of people for the first time since it was founded in 1948.

Both Kim Jong-il and his father Kim Il-sung were all-powerful, authoritarian rulers of the isolated state.

The situation in North Korea appeared stable after the military gave its backing to Kim Jong-un, the source said.

"It's very unlikely," the source said when asked about the possibility of a military coup. "The military has pledged allegiance to Kim Jong-un."

North Korea's collective leadership will include Kim Jong-un, his uncle and the military, the source said.

Jang Song-thaek, 65, brother-in-law of Kim Jong-il and the younger Kim's uncle, is seen as the power behind the throne along with his wife Kim Kyong-hui, Kim Jong-il's sister. So too is Ri Yong-ho, the rising star of the North's military and currently its most senior general.

The younger Kim, who is in his late 20s, has his own supporters but is not strong enough to consolidate power, analysts said.

"I know that he's been able to build a group of supporters around himself who are of his generation," said Koh Yu-hwan, president of the Korean Association of North Korean Studies in Seoul.

"So it is not entirely elders in their 70s, plus some like Jang in their 60s, who are backing him. These young backers will be emerging fairly soon."

Koh said the coterie was put in place by Kim Jong-il before he died. "The relative calm seen these few days shows it's been effective. If things were not running smoothly, then we'd have seen a longer period of 'rule by mummy', with Kim Jong-il being faked as still being alive."

He said the younger Kim would accept the set-up, for now. "Considering the tradition of strong-arm rule by his father and grandfather, things can't be easy for him," he said.

"REGIME SURVIVAL"

Ralph Cossa, an authority on North Korea and president of the U.S. think tank Pacific Forum CSIS, said it made sense that the ruling group would stick together.

"All have a vested interest in regime survival," he said. "Their own personal safety and survival is inextricably tied to regime survival and Kim Jong-un is the manifestation of this. I think the regime will remain stable, at least in the near-term."

He added in a commentary that the new group may be inclined to reform, but stressed this was far from confirmed.

"Over the long term, there appears to be some hope, primarily emanating from Beijing, that Kim Jong-un will take North Korea down the path of Chinese-style reform, apparently based on the belief that Jang is or will be a 'reformer'."

"Who knows, this may be true. While this could relieve the suffering of the North Korean people over time, it will do little to promote the cause of denuclearization, however."

The high-level source also said North Korea test-fired a missile on Monday to warn the United States not to make any moves against it. Pyongyang however had no immediate plans for further tests, barring an escalation of tensions.

"With the missile test, (North) Korea wanted to deliver the message that they have the ability to protect themselves," the source said.

"But (North) Korea is unlikely to conduct a nuclear test in the near future unless provoked" by the United States and South Korea, the source said.

The unpredictable North's nuclear program has been a nagging source of tension for the international community.

Pyongyang carried out nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, and has quit six-party talks with South Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Russia on abandoning its nuclear program and returning to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The high-level source also said Beijing was only notified of Kim's death earlier on Monday, the same day North Korean state television broadcast the news. Kim died on Saturday.

A leading South Korean newspaper reported on Wednesday China learned of Kim's death soon after it occurred.

China has given no official comment or even hints suggesting it was told of Kim's death before the public announcement.

Beijing, the North's closest ally and biggest provider of aid, has pulled out the stops to support the younger Kim.

The government has invited him to visit and, in an unusual gesture, President Hu Jintao and Vice-President Xi Jinping also visited the hermit state's embassy in Beijing to express their condolences. Roads leading to the embassy were blocked.

Mainly, the prospect of instability on its northeastern border worries China and it sees the younger Kim and his coterie as the best prospect for keeping North Korea on an even keel.

North Korea has been pressed by China to denuclearize and is willing to do so on condition that North and South Korea, the United States and China sign an armistice replacing a 1953 ceasefire agreement, the source said.

The two Koreas have been divided for decades and remain technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice but no peace agreement. The United States backed the South, while China supported the North in that conflict.

Pyongyang is also convinced there are U.S. nuclear weapons in South Korea and demands Washington pull them out, the source said.

FIFA 13 PS Vita Review: Handheld Game Console Game Gets Red ...

fifa 13 ps vita 600x337 FIFA 13 PS Vita Review: Handheld Game Console Game Gets Red Card

It?s been many years since I actually regretted a game purchase to the point of anger, and I am shocked and saddened that FIFA 13 for the PS Vita would be it. With the lack of any sort of information over the past few months, I wrongly assumed that EA would have taken some of what?s great about this year?s overhaul and shrink it into the Vita version.

I knew that there would be no cross-play between the two consoles, so my plan was to take my Virtual pro that I have been meticulously working on and move him on the Vita and build while on the go. That was strike two.

Strike three was getting home and eagerly tearing it out of the pack, slapping it in the Vita, firing it up only to find that the game was a kit and roster update. What the heck? After all of the praises I heaped on the console version, I was seriously upset to see that EA took no effort to even make this game anywhere near its console brother.

Now I understand why there has been nearly no information or updates about the Vita version all through the summer.

This game is simply a repack of the FIFA Soccer title that came out when the Vita was released running on the FIFA 11/12 engine. Hardly any of the extra bells and whistles made it into this package. No Ultimate teams, no Match Day, no internationals, no mini games, nothing that is making the console version great is in here and it?s a shame that EA even bothered with the paltry effort. Even the career modes are still the same as the last iteration.

Some of the 1st Touch mechanics may have made it in but if I had never played the first release, this would have been a passable game at best but because I did, this repack at $40 feels like a serious slap in the face. I played this game for maybe an hour just to see if there was any difference in the controls but truth be told, it doesn?t really feel that different. The graphics looks exactly the same as the last version as well as the menus and game modes. This shows the lack of effort that EA Sports made in helping the cause for Sony to make the Vita a vital gaming machine.

At best, I can only recommend this to anyone who seriously needs some footy on the go or if you never played the last iteration. Otherwise, leave this game on the shelf and if you have the earlier release, do a roster update and continue playing it, or if you have an iOS device pay $6 and play that one.

1 out of 4 stars.

Kodak plans to end consumer inkjet printer sales

(AP) ? Kodak said Friday that it plans to stop selling consumer inkjet printers and will eliminate 200 more jobs than previously projected as it requested more time to submit its framework for emerging from bankruptcy protection.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January, wants the court to extend the exclusivity period for the filing of its plan until Feb. 28. After the exclusivity period expires, creditors may file competing plans.

In the months since its filing, Eastman Kodak Co. has worked to reshape itself, selling off businesses, eliminating jobs and slashing other costs, with the goal of emerging from court protection in 2013.

Kodak said earlier this year that it would stop making digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames. Earlier this year, it sold Kodak Gallery, its online photo service business, to Shutterfly Inc. for $23.8 million.

In August, Kodak said that it was looking to sell its personalized imaging and document imaging businesses in order to focus on its printing and business services. Kodak's document imaging division makes scanners and offers related software and services. The personalized imaging business includes photo paper and still camera film products. It also offers souvenir photo products at theme parks and other venues.

The company also has been trying to sell off its collection of patents, but earlier this month it indefinitely postponed an auction of its imaging patent portfolios. The company said in court filings at the time that it was looking at other possibilities, including keeping the patents and creating a company to make money by licensing the technology.

On Friday, the company said it now plans to focus its consumer inkjet business on the sale of ink for its existing printers and start winding down sales of printers next year.

The move is in line with the company's goal of refocusing itself on commercial and packaging printing, along with other services, and is expected to significantly boost cash flow in the U.S. starting in the first half of 2013, Kodak said.

The company, whose workforce peaked at nearly 150,000 workers in 1988, has already cut 2,700 jobs this year. It originally planned to cut at least another 1,000 jobs, but boosted that figure to 1,200 on Friday.

Kodak said the 23 percent reduction in its employee ranks save the company more than $340 million per year and reduce its workforce to about 13,100 employees.

Kodak was founded in 1880, and it introduced the iconic Brownie camera in 1900, making hobby photography affordable for many people. Its Kodachrome film, introduced in 1935, became the first commercially successful amateur color film.

But the company has struggled in recent years, hurt by the shift toward digital photography and competition from Japanese companies such as Canon.

A hearing on the motion and other matters is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Buddhist statue acquired by Nazis is space rock

One religious statue has a stronger connection than most to the heavens. An 11th-century carving from Mongolia of the Buddhist god Vai?ravana was fashioned from a meteorite fragment, a chemical analysis shows. Its extraterrestrial origins make it unique in both religious art and meteorite science.

The iron-rich statue, 24 centimetres tall, has had a colourful past. It was apparently brought to Germany in 1939 by a Nazi-backed archaeological expedition to search for the roots of Aryanism.

A swastika on the armoured Buddha's breastplate may have been a motivating factor in bringing the statue to Germany. The swastika is a common symbol in eastern culture and decorates many Hindu and Buddhist statues ? although the version on the statue is a mirror image of the form favoured by the Nazis.

It's unclear whether the Nazis found anything of unusual significance in the statue, but Elmar Buchner at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and his colleagues certainly have.

"When I first saw the statue I was sure that it is made of an iron meteorite," Buchner says.

Their chemical analysis of the statue confirmed the hunch. It showed that the concentrations of metals, including iron, nickel, cobalt and chromium, matched the values known from iron meteorites.

Space Buddha

More precisely, Buchner's team has managed to tie the statue to a known meteorite ? the Chinga ataxite, which fell to Earth between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago near the border between Siberia and Mongolia. It fragmented as it fell, and just two pieces heavier than 10 kilograms were known before the new analysis. The "Space Buddha", as Buchner's team has dubbed the statue, is the third such piece, at 10.6 kilograms.

"Having looked at some of the published trace element data for this artefact, it looks pretty convincing to me that this is very likely originated from Chinga iron meteorite," says Meenakshi Wadhwa, director of the Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Other venerated objects are thought to have had similar extraterrestrial origins ? including the Black Stone in Mecca, Saudi Arabia ? but Wadhwa says it is difficult to verify these assumptions because the objects have never been fully analysed scientifically. And none of these supposed meteorite fragments has been carved into a religious sculpture, making the Space Buddha the only one of its kind.

Meteoritic metal is associated with a number of ancient cultures, says Matthew Genge at Imperial College London. "There are reports of Egyptian necklaces including meteoritic metal," he says. "But there is no evidence that the Egyptians were aware of their extraterrestrial provenance."

Sky iron

In Tibet, though, meteoritic iron was long known as namchag, or "sky iron", says Buchner's team, suggesting the locals were aware of the origins of the unusual material.

"There is no definitive evidence that ancient peoples witnessed and revered meteorite falls," says Genge. "However, the chances are good. There are so many modern witnessed falls that ancient people must have seen them. They are such special events that they must have attracted awe and speculation."

The age of the Chinga meteorite means that no one alive when the Space Buddha was carved would have seen this particular rock fall from the sky. Instead it would have been recovered much later ? making it what geologists call a meteorite find.

That creates something of a problem, says Genge. How did ancient people come to venerate meteorites, or meteorite craters, without witnessing the moment of impact?

"One of the most puzzling examples is Gosses Bluff in Australia," he says. "This crater is 142 million years old, and yet the Aborigines hold that it formed by the fall of the baby of one of the celestial women from the sky. A strange coincidence perhaps."

Smoking relapse prevention a healthy step for new mothers, babies, researchers say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center, concerned that women who quit smoking during their pregnancies often resume smoking after they deliver their baby, tested self-help interventions designed to prevent postpartum smoking relapse.

"We'd first like to see more women quit smoking when they become pregnant," said Thomas H. Brandon, Ph.D., senior member at Moffitt and chair of the Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior. "However, even among those who do quit, the majority return to smoking shortly after they give birth."

According to the researchers, nearly 50 percent of pregnant women who smoke quit during their pregnancies, but relapse rates are estimated at between 50 and 80 percent. Not only is this resumption of smoking harmful for the new mothers, but their babies could also be exposed to dangerous environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).

"More and more women are aware that it is in the best interest of their child to give up alcohol and cigarettes while pregnant," said Dr. Brandon, the study's senior author. "But, unfortunately, they don't realize that exposing their infant to ETS can be equally as harmful."

Infants exposed to ETS are more likely to suffer from respiratory, die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), get middle ear infections, have lower IQ's and more behavioral problems, and to become smokers themselves later in life. Also, a mother who returns to smoking loses the progress she's made to improve her health and life expectancy.

In an effort to find better ways to prevent smoking relapse in new mothers, the researchers recruited 504 women from around the United States. All were in their fourth to eighth month of pregnancy and had already quit smoking. Half of the women were mailed two existing "usual care" self-help guides about quitting smoking and the dangers of ETS on newborns. The other half were sent a series of ten booklets developed at Moffitt, titled "Forever Free for Baby and Me." These booklets provided more detailed information about how to stay off cigarettes during and after pregnancy. Additional support information for the mom-to-be's partner was also included the series.

By eight months after they gave birth, 70 percent of the women who received the "Forever Free" series reported that they remained off cigarettes, compared to 59 percent of those who received the "usual care" booklets.

The researchers reported that the treatment effect depended upon the women's household income and age. For example, among lower income women earning less than $30,000 per year who received the "Forever Free" intervention, 72 percent were not smoking a year after giving birth, compared to 51 percent for women who received "usual care." In contrast, women with higher incomes received no additional benefit from the "Forever Free" booklets. The effect of age was similar to income, with younger women showing greater benefit from the "Forever Free" booklets.

"Our booklets were designed to be accessible to a diverse population with respect to content, reading level and graphic design," said co-author Vani Nath Simmons, Ph.D, an assistant member at Moffitt. "We think that they provided novel information and assistance to these women--information that may have already been available to older and higher-income women."

The researchers concluded that "Forever Free for Baby and Me," "a minimal, inexpensive, self-help intervention" has the potential to reach and help pregnant women and new mothers -- a particularly challenging subpopulation of smokers.

The study was published online in the American Journal of Public Health.

Pedaling For Health ? The Many Benefits of Biking | Natural Holistic ...

If you enjoy this post, please share it using the buttons in the post, or email it to a friend, we'd really appreciate it!

There are so many reasons to take up cycling, it???s fantastic exercise, you can get to places quicker than walking, it gives you a better night???s sleep and it increases your brainpower.

Most importantly it comes with loads of fitness and health benefits.

Cycling is proven to burn more calories and fat than a lot of sports as the body???s metabolic rate efficiently burns not only during the bike ride, but also for several hours after. Even after cycling for only 20 minutes, you could still be burning fat a couple of hours after.

The fitter you are the more profound the fitness benefits are. A cyclist who does fast intervals opposed to cycling at a constant slow pace is likely to burn three times as many calories.

It also allows you to have healthy family time as the whole family can get involved providing they???ve got a bike. Cycling is kind on your joints which makes it a very accessible sport whatever your age. Cycling is great for children as it shows them the benefits of exercise in a daily routine, and if they start young it???s likely they???ll continue to grow up and be healthy human beings who regularly exercise. Be sure to acquire the right equipment if children are participating. Cycling helmets at tweeks cycles are not only a must ??? but also affordable.

All exercise promotes a healthy lifestyle but quite importantly it can be helpful in warding off cancer. It???s been proven that cycling helps to keep your cells in working order. By no means could this remove or prevent the disease, but it would certainly improve your chances of remaining well. A study has shown that people who cycled at least 30 minutes a day were half as likely to develop cancer than those who didn???t.

Cycling isn???t just good for the body but it also benefits the brain. Cycling helps to build new brain cells that are responsible for the memory. (This tends to deteriorate at age 30). So cycling will undoubtedly give you those few extra brain cells to help you through the day helping you stay awake and focused.

Cycling also boosts the oxygen and blood flow to the brain which fires and regenerates receptors. Not only does it keep you alert, but it also helps you sleep when off to bed. Exercising outside exposes you to daylight, which helps get rid of stress and allows you to have a good night???s sleep.

One of the many reasons cycling is a popular sport to take up is because it can help you to look younger. Cycling regularly helps protect your skin against UV radiation therefore reducing the signs of aging.

The increased circulation by cycling helps to deliver nutrients and oxygen to cells more effectively, which in turn flushes out harmful toxins, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. However do make sure that you apply a high factor sun cream as to avoid being burnt, which could lead to skin cancer.

So why not start cycling to work or school to start a healthier lifestyle, there are so many benefits. You don???t have to be a pro at the sport but just the short regular bike ride will not only boost your metabolism but also benefit your body and your life.

And don?t forget your vitamins!

Finding a good multi-vitamin for the entire family can be difficult, but Xtend-Life???s Total Balance Unisex is the perfect supplement for everyone, even children from age 12 and older. It???s also perfect for women who have gone through menopause. In fact, Total Balance Unisex addresses issues that affect everyone, and it does so with a blend of all natural ingredients. The bio-actives present in Total Balance Unisex provide a great way of keeping healthy no matter what your age or gender.

My Life as a Sugar Baby

Emily Yoffe.

Emily Yoffe

Photograph by Teresa Castracane.

Emily Yoffe, aka Dear Prudence, is on Washingtonpost.com weekly to chat live with readers. An edited?transcript of the chat is below. (Sign up here?to get Dear Prudence delivered to your inbox each week. Read Prudie?s?Slate columns?here. Send questions to Prudence at prudence@slate.com.)

Emily Yoffe: Good afternoon, I look forward to your questions.

Q. Tell Fianc? I Used To Be a Sugar Baby?: I have an odd question today. For a few years I was a professional sugar baby. I had at least four sugar daddies at one time (I did NOT sleep with them or do anything of a sexual nature.) I was simply a companion, a travel and dinner date, and someone to confide in. Through this I was able to get through school and purchase my own house with the money I made. My problem is do I tell my fianc? about my past or should I tell him I just dated a wealthy man? I don't want him to think of me as a gold digger!

A: You must be a hell of a conversationalist. Are there that many rich men who complain, "All my wife wants to do is have sex with me, but she doesn't listen when I take her out to dinner?" I believe that when entering a new relationship one doesn't have to disclose all past sexual encounters, but that you do owe your new love information that's relevant. That includes such things as STD status, or having slept with your boyfriend's brother. Your question is not about sex, but money. But if you've engaged in professional activities that you would be too embarrassed to tell your beloved, then you probably should tell because you surely don't want someone else to tell. I'm assuming some friends of yours must have known how you managed to avoid student debt. Since you got engaged, you've waited a rather long time to reveal how you put yourself through college. I think you should tell your fianc? that for several years you went out with a series of rich men who helped support you but with whom you didn't have sex. If he asks you direct questions, answer them honestly. He may find this hard to believe, he may be repulsed, he may admire your entrepreneurial spirit. But you don't want to be worried that someone else will mention to him the real reason you could afford that down payment.

Dear Prudence: Excessive Family PDA

Q. Friend Teased My Child: After my newborn and I were discharged from hospital, she had to be rehospitalized for some minor health concerns. Due to circumstances, my husband couldn't care for our older daughter, so we asked a close, trusted family friend to look after her for three days. After our baby came back home my older child became completely disruptive, jealous, and demanding. She was fine before so I had no idea why she suddenly disliked the new baby. After some gentle probing we discovered our friend thought it would be hilarious to tell our child that mommy and daddy didn't want her anymore. And that's why we had a new baby?to replace her. It sounds as though the friend drummed the story into her over and over judging by my daughter's reaction. My daughter has a lower cognitive ability than mainstream children. So for her to be this upset, our friend would have had to repeat the story several times. My friend likes to kid around and tease my daughter which was always within the limits of good-natured fun. But this really crossed the line. I am livid that she thought it was funny to cause my child distress. I've refrained myself from speaking to her about this because I don't trust what might come out of my mouth. What should I say to her?

A: I'm assuming your young child to the best of her ability is reporting what your friend actually said. If so, then your friend has rocks for a brain and a heart. But first of all, you've got to get your friend's version. Bear in mind, even the most seemingly loving and mature older brother or sister has been known to become a snarling dog once realizing that this adorable new baby is here for keeps. So sit down with your friend and say you appreciate her stepping up during your emergency. Then explain that Marissa's adjustment to her new sister has recently been particularly difficult and you'd like to know what the friend said to her about the new baby. If your friend says she gave Marissa the standard pablum about how exciting it is to be a big sister, then you have to say Marissa must really have misunderstood. Say she reported that you that you told her she was being replaced. You understand this would have been teasingly, but that for the sake of your daughter's psychological health it's really important you know what was said. If she owns up then say to her you'd like her to apologize to Marissa and explain what she said wasn't true, it was just a very bad joke. When that's done you can privately say to her that you are deeply wounded that she would tell a vulnerable girl something so terrible and you hope she sees the distress she's caused all of you. I don't see how you go on with a friendship with someone so lacking in judgment.

Q. Re: sugar baby: About a year ago, my wife told me that she had been a "sugar baby" in college. FWIW, it was painful for me to hear but everyone has done things that are not proud of. And after a few months of counseling, everything is back to normal. I would recommend that everyone be upfront and honest about these things.

A: Thank you. It's always so helpful to hear from someone else who has been there.

Q. Dating My Former Student: I am dating a former high-school student and have been for some time. I love her and did not become involved with her until she was in her mid-20s. We didn't even see each other for five years after her graduation. I know we did everything morally and have nothing about which we should be ashamed. That said, I still hesitate to introduce her to my colleagues, who also taught her, as my girlfriend. I worry I will come off as a pervert or that they will judge me for dating a former student. My girlfriend has introduced me to many of her friends and her family, and I have not done the same, because many of my good friends are teachers, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit I fell for a former student. If I want to keep my girlfriend, and I really want to keep her, I need to get over my ridiculous embarrassment. Do you have any suggestions about how I could introduce my girlfriend without making our former relationship the center of the introduction?

A: You introduce her and then the two of then tell your delightful story about reconnecting. She says something like, "I was getting popcorn at the movie theater last year when I saw Dan ordering Rasinettes. I even said, 'Hey Mr. Miller,' it's Courtney Simmons." Then you say at first you didn't recognize her, it had been years since you'd seen her. But you started talking and sparks flew. By doing this you charmingly answer all the questions that are forming in the minds of your colleagues and you are reassuring everyone that this relationship didn't start until Courtney was long out of school and an adult. Remember that if you act and feel guilty, that will send the subliminal message that there actually is a dirty little secret to this romance. There isn't, so be glad Courtney's yearbook is gathering dust and that you have found each other.

Vegetarian Bibimbap | Vegetarian Recipes | Korean Recipes | Bows ...

Published: September 24, 2012Posted in: RecipesTags: bibimbap, gojuchang, korean, recipes, vegetarian

Stir fry is something I make a ton, and it?s time to change it up. I?d read about how delicious bibimbap can be (and that it?s easy to make), so I decided to try it at home with my vegetables of choice and quinoa instead of race. You can other vegetables if you like them more than what I chose, but the idea is to separately cook vegetables and layer rice, vegetables, and gojuchang in a bowl.

  • 1 cup of shiitake mushrooms
  • 3 cups spinach
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1/2 cup quinoa
  • 2 tsp gojuchang
  • 3 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1.5 ?tsp rice vinegar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp ?olive oil

Next, mince 2 garlic cloves and place in the wok with a teaspoon of olive oil. Add a tablespoon of sesame oil and spinach. Cook until wilted and some of the water evaporates (about 5 minutes). Set aside.

After 20 minutes, drain cucumber and squeeze out excess water. Place cucumber in a bowl and cover with 1.5 tsp rice vinegar and a 1/2 tsp of sesame oil.

Fry 2 eggs over easy in sesame oil in a separate pan right before serving.

Layer ingredients, starting with the quinoa. Place quinoa at the bottom of a bowl, then add vegetables covering 1/3 of the quinoa with each vegetable.

Place a teaspoon of gojuchang in the middle of the vegetables.

Then top with the egg. Serve immediately and tell diners to mix ingredients together to eat.

Other variations can include things like carrots, zucchini, seaweed, tofu, and more.

How To Revive American Retail - Business Insider

In the not-so-distant past Americans were proud to know that we made the best products in the world.

From cars to clothing, we were unbeatable on value and quality. Why is that sense of pride something that many of us can hardly imagine, let alone remember?

Put simply: the quality and value that once were the hallmarks of American manufacturing have slowly deteriorated as companies have come to believe that the only way to stay competitive is to send manufacturing overseas. ?

Today we?re paying a price for this shift, and it is increasingly clear that our nation?s economic prosperity depends upon our ability to revive American manufacturing in the 21st century. For the first time in years, thanks to a combination of technology and changes in consumer behavior, we have a real opportunity to do just that.?

Since the 1980s, many careers, including my own, have been dedicated to cutting costs in the manufacturing of consumer goods. At various points on the production line, pennies are shaved by opting for cheaper materials, processes and labor. With every cut, consumers grow accustomed to being offered less expensive, lower quality products.

These trends are particularly apparent in the apparel industry, where labor and overhead costs have driven the bulk of manufacturing to shift overseas. Simultaneously, an increasingly complex retail supply chain that marks up prices many times over has reinforced the downward pressure on production costs, making it difficult for American-made companies to compete. As a result, consumers wanting to buy garments that are made in the USA have to choose between premium prices or poor quality.

I believe that this is a false choice. In recent years, I've been focused on building a business that honors a mantra borrowed from American designers Charles and Ray Eames: "The best for the most for the least."

In other words: consumers shouldn?t have to choose between high quality for high cost and low quality for low cost. Quality, American-made apparel should not be a luxury available only to a select few. ?
It is possible today to make the best quality clothing in the world, here in America, without asking the consumer to make sacrifices and without undercutting the company?s bottom line. ?

The solution has less do with patriotism and more to do with capitalizing on the leaner, smarter ways of doing business afforded by innovation. Across industries, new technologies have pushed companies to become more efficient, but this shift has yet to happen in a meaningful way in the apparel sector.

While on the surface it might seem clear that off-shoring is a cheaper means of production, there are a number of less obvious factors that can make domestic manufacturing a better choice. In fact, by removing layers from the traditional retail supply chain and using a direct-to-consumer model, it?s possible to eliminate up to 75% of the cost of a typical garment while manufacturing in the U.S.

Domestic production also makes it possible to be more effective at monitoring standards on the production line, increasing accuracy in purchasing and inventory estimates by capitalizing on shorter lead times, and reacting rapidly to changing consumer demands. These are real efficiencies that translate into real savings and a better bottom line.

Now is the perfect time for innovation, as customers are showing a readiness to forgo the traditional retail experience in pursuit of more convenient options and better overall value. Many consumers?and this applies not just to the younger generation?are becoming more accustomed to shopping online. This change should have a profound impact on our assumptions about retail, indicating a unique opportunity to breathe new life into our manufacturing base.

Once we regain confidence in the capabilities of domestic manufacturing, and change our outdated perceptions of the economics of off shoring, we?ll be able move into a new era of manufacturing led by American innovation.

If American-made brands offer exceptionally well-made products at prices that make sense, the false choice between quality and price can be resolved, liberating consumers to become the driving force behind the revival of the manufacturing industry in the United States.

Nutrition supplements fail to help famine-hit ... - Body Health & Fitness

RECORDER REPORT

Array())
?> Babies and toddlers at risk of malnutrition weren?t helped by special energy-dense food supplements given along with normal food aid, according to a new study on September 18.

Humanitarian groups usually provide staples, like grains and beans, to help families facing food shortages. But some groups wondered if specially-formulated supplements could help more kids stave off malnutrition.

These ?ready-to-use supplementary food? products, often with a peanut butter-base, are already used as an extra boost of calories, fats and nutrients to help get malnourished kids back on track. But new research indicates the food supplements, given as a preventative measure on a wider scale, may not have the hoped-for impact.

The study was published in the online journal PLOS Medicine. In Chad, where annual dry seasons leave a four-month ?hunger gap? between harvests, researchers monitored over 1,000 babies and toddlers aged six months to three years old.

Half of their families were given standard food rations, and the other half received the same rations, plus a daily dose ? about three spoonfuls ? of the special food supplements for the targeted children. At the end of the four months, despite the extra supplements, ?8.6 percent of both groups were found to be undernourished,? or below the desired threshold for height and weight, explained lead researcher Lieven Huybregts. ?We had to refer them to a treatment program outside the study,? the Ghent University researcher told AFP, which was the opposite of what they?d hoped for.

The kids who got the supplements did grow a bit taller, however, had better hemoglobin levels ? meaning a decreased risk of anemia ? and had lower rates of fever and diarrhea. These side-benefits could be traced to the extra vitamins and minerals packed into the supplements, Huybregts suggested. But it is not clear why the supplements didn?t help the kids gain weight. It may have their overall diet: the kids who got the supplements, which were spread among several children, ate less of the other rations, said Huybregts.

He said the researchers are analysing the data ?to see if the supplement was really consumed and what the pattern was.?

For now, he said, the data suggest widespread distribution of the food supplements, which are pricier than traditional food rations, may not be a cost-effective solution to famine in these hunger-prone areas. And if the side-benefits are related to the vitamins and minerals in the supplements, ?maybe there are more affordable strategies to provide micronutrients,? perhaps in syrup and tablet form, he said.

?
Things I did not know (Part 5,985,876)

by digby

Now we know why the skinflint rich hate Obamacare:

Most Americans pay more in payroll taxes ? which finance Social Security and Medicare ? than they do in income taxes. The rich are different.

Mitt and Ann Romney paid virtually no payroll taxes in 2011, because nearly all their income came from investments on which payroll tax was not owed.

For most taxpayers, the 2.9 percent Medicare tax levied on wage income will be the same next year as it was in 2011. But starting in 2013, high-income taxpayers will pay more ? and in the Romneys? case ? much more.

Married taxpayers with income over $250,000 will pay a 3.8 percent Medicare tax rate on income over that amount, and all income will be covered, including the capital gains that make up most of the Romneys? income.

If their 2013 income were unchanged from this year, their Medicare tax bill would exceed $500,000.

That tax was passed as part of the health care bill enacted by Congress and signed by President Obama in 2010 ? a law known as ?Obamacare.? Mr. Romney has pledged to seek repeal of that law.

Let's lift the cap on social security too, while we're at it. After all, if a man is so rich that he he can earn many millions while running for president --- so many millions that he was able to "over-contribute" as a PR stunt, then he can easily afford to put more money into the safety net. In fact, he won't even feel it.

Oh, and also. This seems to be a good time to clear up the confusion about Rafalca the dressage horse. Like may others, I erroneously said the other day that the Romney's got a $77,000 deduction for the horse. That's wrong. As this thorough Forbes piece spells out, they haven't actually gotten it yet. It's a deferred deduction. This deferral is very complicated. I don't think it will be something you'll find on Turbo Tax as an option to pay for your quilting hobby, but wealthy people like the Romney's have high paid tax lawyers to do that for them.
